With 2 kids in the house under 8 years old, clutter is usually the norm. Life's daily routine takes most of the waking time we have and finding time to get rid of items that are no longer needed or played with can seem impossible. That's where this book really shines. It teaches you how to truly declutter before attempting to get your kids involved. It also helps you set up reasonable expectations for cleaning your home. The key to the whole process is to start. Start somewhere! That's exactly what Chapter one is about - starting the process. Pick a room. Pick a closet. Whatever - just pick a place to begin and make small improvements before trying to tackle "the monster" in the attic or garage.
I also like how the author has broken down chapters by age of the child. This is important in that younger children just don't grasp the need for cleanliness and order. Your OCD is not theirs. ;) As children grow and mature they can handle more responsibility taking some of the weight off your shoulders in regards to helping out around the house - not just their room.
There are even tips in Chapter 6 on helping you make your new habits stick over time so it never becomes overwhelming again. And Chapter 7 is great for "troubleshooting" when the kids just aren't into your new desire for clean. The timeless quotes sprinkled throughout were a nice touch by the author as well. Overall, if you are overwhelmed with clutter, and feel it's time to tackle that monster, get this book. It will definitely help!

didnt help me no children
A good book, motivational, with lots of specific steps, which I liked. But there was lots of other information that was not pertinent, like a whole list of "house rules" for kids that had nothing to do with cleaning. I don't need parenting advice.
I really liked this book. It gives you a ton of tips and tricks on how to create the habit of staying clean and organized at your home. What I really like is that the book gives you tips for all kinds of situations. Whether you have a toddler or a 6yr old, there is a tip for that! Great book!
I have a 6 and 10-year-old and am always looking for ways to keep the clutter under control in our small two-bedroom home. It is an ongoing process. I appreciate that the book breaks down decluttering strategies by age group. There are several useful ideas for making the process fun for kids and painless for adults. The scripts for talking to children in the appendix was particularly useful. I also appreciate that the book discusses decluttering against the larger context of teaching children good values and skill sets that will serve them later life.
I found this book helpful and inspiring...plus written in real language and terms. It was smart how it has different age groups with strategies and ideas listed to help in the cause for cleanliness.
Also found the various quotes sprinkled throughout to be interesting and often inspiring. Plus the appendix section in the back had lots of great useful info. Two thumbs up!
Got a 2 year old I have to take care of and this book came just in time in preparation for the future. I will definitely be employing the one-in-one-out rule and make sure to drill this habit into him. 2 years of decluttering and I've had enough. I can't imagine how others plan on decluttering for kids much longer than that.
The specific directions are well appreciated for different age groups especially because I look after my nieces and nephews. Their parents will thank me later.
Even with just one young boy of 3, clutter and mess can be a problem. We have another just about to arrive so I thought I'd take a look at this book for some advice before the clutter starts getting completely unmanageable. I love how this book is short & concise but is packed with tons of actionable advice. The tips with how to deal with children of different ages and "troubleshoot" when they just aren't in the mood for helping clear up (which is most of the time) are just great. Awesome appendices too!!
